Today, we congratulate Sérgio Magalhães for his achievement in joining Técnico's research career as an Assistant Researcher at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences (DECN).

His work focuses on the analysis of implantation and irradiation effects on crystals, with special interest in the structural characterization and evolution of properties under radiation.

As part of his activity, he developed MROX, an advanced simulation program that adjusts X-ray diffraction measurements in implanted samples. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), it improves the identification of crystalline defects, being one of only two programs in the world with this capability.

The goal of his research is to understand the impact of radiation on materials, allowing the development of more resistant materials for applications in nuclear fusion, nanotechnology and aerospace. AI in MROX reduces errors and optimizes simulations, accelerating experimental analysis and reducing costs.
