The Department of Engineering and Nuclear Sciences, designated by DECN, is a teaching and research unit of the Instituto Superior Técnico, under the terms of article 19 of the IST Statutes.

The DECN's essential objectives are to carry out activities in the field of engineering and nuclear sciences and in areas that it considers to be related, namely the teaching of 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd cycles, fundamental and applied research, the pursuit of scientific knowledge and technological development, the provision of specialized services to society and national and international cooperation.
