Elmar Biernat, DECN's Principal Researcher
New researchers in 2025.

Elmar Biernat began his research career at Instituto Superior Técnico and currently holds the position of Principal Rechearcher at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences (DECN), where he develops his activity in the area of theoretical nuclear and hadronic physics, using quantum and computational methods to study the structure and interactions of atomic nuclei and hadrons, both in fundamental and applied research.
Elmar's work focuses particularly on the theoretical description of mesons and the analysis of nuclear reactions, with special emphasis on Helium-3-induced reactions, which are fundamental for the progress of nuclear fusion. The main goal of his research is to understand the properties of nuclei and hadrons, as well as the forces between nuclei, that result from the dynamics of quarks and gluons. He believes that "the advance of nuclear fusion has the potential to transform energy production" and that his work directly contributes to this progress. It also explores new possibilities in the area of nuclear medicine, such as the production of radioisotopes for the treatment of cancer.
«Being a Principal Researcher means leading my own research at the Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology (C2TN), tackling scientific and technological challenges, building teams, mentoring students, and effectively and efficiently promoting the interconnection between theory and practice in solving the challenges of the future».
We wish you much success in your new stage!
