Duarte Esteves, PhD Student, awarded the "NIMB Young Researcher Award" in the field of advanced materials

Duarte Esteves, a PhD student in Technological Physics Engineering at CTN, Técnico, and at the Institute of Engineering of Systems and Computers for Microsystems and Nanotechnologies (INESC-MN), was recently awarded in Madrid, Spain, with the NIMB Young Researcher Award.
The award, presented at the 22nd edition of the prestigious international conference "Radiation Effects in Insulators" (REI 2025) and sponsored by the journal Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B (NIMB), published by Elsevier, recognized the scientific quality and impact of his work titled "Anisotropic structural effects in Cr-implanted β-Ga₂O₃ single-crystals" in the field of advanced materials.
The excellence of the oral presentation highlighted the cutting-edge research currently being developed at the Nuclear Technology Campus (CTN), under the guidance of researchers Katharina Lorenz and Marco Peres, in collaboration with the Universities of Helsinki and Oslo, as well as with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.
Their research work contributes to the advancement of knowledge about advanced semiconductor materials, particularly regarding the impact of ion implantation in gallium oxide (β-Ga₂O₃), which has great technological potential — a promising semiconductor with future applications in sensors and ultraviolet radiation detectors.
