Nanotechnology and multifunctional materials in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer

Vital Filho, a PhD student in Materials Engineering at Técnico in the Technological and Nuclear Campus (CTN), participated in the conference "MATERIAIS 2025", which took place from July 1 to 3 at the Conference Center of the Instituto Superior Técnico, where he presented his poster titled "Tailoring Multifunctional Nanoplatforms Based on SPIONs/AuNPs and Graphene Oxide for Advanced Healthcare Applications", focused on the field of nanotechnology applied to health.

During the event, Vital had the opportunity to share with the scientific community the results of his research, developed under the guidance of researchers Laura Pereira (C2TN - Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies and Department of Engineering and Nuclear Sciences (DECN)), Teresa Pinheiro (Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB)), and Sara Lacerda (National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)).

The work focuses on the development of multifunctional nanoplatforms, with high potential for applications in cancer diagnosis and treatment. The research combines three key components:

  • Graphene oxide – a material with high surface area and excellent biocompatibility;
  • SPIONs – magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, used in magnetic resonance imaging and therapies such as hyperthermia;
  • Gold nanoparticles – with unique optical properties that enhance radiation-based therapies. The displayed poster focused on the physicochemical characterization of these structures, analyzing aspects such as their morphology, composition, stability, and magnetic behavior — an essential step to validate their safe and effective application in biomedical contexts.

MATERIALS 2025 brought together three major scientific events: the XXII Congress of the Portuguese Society of Materials, the XIII International Symposium on Materials, and the III Iberian Meeting on Materials Science. Under the theme "New approaches to reshape the future", it promoted innovation and the connection between different fields of knowledge, highlighting scientific and technological innovation.
