CTN for the World: radiosensitizers in cancer treatment

It was in September that Gil Alves, Maria Antunes Lopes, and Duarte Oliveira, Master's students from the Radiation Protection and Safety Group of Center for Nuclear Science and Technologies (C2TN) at Técnico and from the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), embarked on a trip to Brussels (Belgium), to participate in the "ERRS25 – European Radiation Research Society" Conference.

During the event, the young students had the opportunity to share their work on radiosensitizers in cancer treatment, developed in collaboration with the Champalimaud Foundation, where they conducted experiments with clinical radiotherapy beams.

Guided by researchers Ana Belchior (C²TN) and Teresa Pinheiro (iBB), each presentation represented an important step in understanding and improving the effectiveness of cancer therapies.

Presentations given:

  • Duarte Oliveira: “3D model of cell spheroids as a tool to study the radiosensitization potential of gold-coated nanodiamonds.”
  • Gil Alves: “Evaluation of the potential of gold-coated nanodiamonds as radiosensitizers to enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy.”
  • Maria Antunes Lopes: “Evaluation of the potential of radiosensitizers to improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy.”

This experience allowed them to connect with international experts, exchange ideas, and strengthen skills in cutting-edge research in radiotherapy and radiation biology.
