DECN is organized in scientific areas that represent its fields of intervention in teaching, research and service provision, and which integrate its researchers and teachers.
Each area is structured in pedagogical terms by groups of disciplines and participates in the annual distribution of teaching service and curricular units offered by DECN. Each area also participates in the offer of training at the Doctoral level, the DECN or in co-tutelage with other IST departments or other Universities.

The scientific areas of DECN are currently the following:

Nuclear Technologies and Radiological Protection

Responsible: Eduardo da Costa Alves

Deals with the development and applications of Nuclear Technologies, using sources of ionizing radiation (particle and beam accelerators, nuclear reactors, radioactive sources and radioactive materials). It also addresses aspects of radiation protection related to the assessment of the risks to individuals and the environment arising from the potentially harmful effects of exposure to ionizing radiation in multiple domains, ranging from fundamental research to applications in health, the environment, industry, energy, engineering and security. Special attention is also given to the Education and Training of professionals, to equip them or strengthen their knowledge and skills in Nuclear Technologies and Radiological Protection.

Chemical and Radiopharmaceutical Sciences

Responsible: António Gonçalves

Present a broad spectrum of activities in fields as diverse as materials science, cultural heritage, environment and health, dedicated to scientific research and innovation and to teaching in the three cycles of higher education. It also adds a set of technologies and diverse scientific infrastructures unique in Portugal.

The research, teaching and services activities carried out in each area and the researchers and teachers integrated in them can be consulted on the left pages.
